There’s nothing our athletes like better than matchplay and recently, Rhinos’ U17 Elite and U15 Comp Squads received a pre-summer tournament treat thanks to a friendly against touring Sydney team, Pymble Ladies College.
Some of the athletes would have met before, a number of Rhinos players and coaches also representatives of Leeds Athletic Netball Club who were fortunate to tour Australia during 2018 and play against several teams, Pymble included. When Pymble sought out matchplay opportunities as a part of their UK tour this summer, Leeds Rhinos sprang to mind and arrangements were made to meet up again on the court.
The visitors fought hard throughout the fixture and showed the gutsy type of play we have come to expect of Australian teams; although Rhinos had plenty of grit of their own to demonstrate with every game resulting in a close finish and both sides walking away with heads held high.
Maggie Birkinshaw, Rhinos U17 Elite Coach, said:
“It has been our absolute pleasure to welcome Pymble Ladies College to Leeds for an evening of matchplay against Leeds Rhinos Netball.
“Our U15 Competition Squad and U17 Elite Squads relish the opportunity to play fixtures against different opponents. We know the level of skill and ability of athletes from Australia and are very grateful to Pymble for bringing this level of competition and giving our athletes some high intensity matchplay. We’re already looking forward to the next one!”
Gin Welsh, Director of Coaching for Pymble Ladies College, added:
“Thank you to Leeds Rhinos Netball for accommodating us with this evening of matchplay at the end of our extremely successful tour of England.
“The quality of play and the spirit in which the game was played was excellent and we are grateful for their giving us the opportunity.”
Rhinos wish all squads competing in NPL tournaments this summer the best of luck.
