Leeds Rhinos Netball is thrilled to announce its new partnership with South Yorkshire-based further education provider, Barnsley College.
Today’s is the first of several key partnerships Rhinos is announcing over the coming weeks as its new season of netball kicks off across Yorkshire this month, with the facility in Barnsley becoming the southern hub for its U15 and U13 Regional Academy training programme. The Academy is part of England Netball’s pathway programme for Yorkshire and the Humber, and offers high-performance training to athletes aspiring to play at the national level and recognised by Rhinos or by the County netball heads as the most talented in this age group. Rhinos will also run their new Futures Hub for 16-19-year-old athletes from the college starting late September.
With state-of-the-art facilities including two sports halls with performance-standard sprung flooring, two fitness centres fully equipped for strength and conditioning work and a sports psychology lab running the latest performance analysis software, the Sports Academy at Barnsley College is one of the leading education providers for performance sport courses in Yorkshire. Running several academies of its own across multiple sports including netball, football, rugby union, cricket and basketball, Barnsley proved the ideal choice for the Rhinos programme both geographically and logistically, highlighted by Rhinos’ Director for Netball, Anna Carter:
“Finding the right facility is key to a successful programme and while we have strong relationships in Leeds and the north of our region we began speaking with Barnsley last season with a view to securing a space to accommodate athletes in the south. Obviously, ours is a large region to cover and we were conscious the talent toward the south side of the region has too much travel to come north and we have a responsibility to our athletes across the whole of Yorkshire to provide the space to develop that talent further.”
Luke Forgione, Sport and Athlete Development Co-ordinator at Barnsley College Sports Academy, added: “We are absolutely thrilled to be working in partnership with Leeds Rhinos Netball. As a Sports Academy, we are keen to engage future netballers and give them to the opportunity to improve their ability by providing a fantastic sporting and education experience. This new partnership will only strengthen our netball provision and offer a performance pathway for talented players in the local area to progress, whilst shining a light on the sport as a whole.”
Rhinos Regional Academy commences Monday, September 16 at Barnsley College for all selected athletes. Trials for Rhinos Futures Hub South for 16-19-year-olds take place throughout September; to register, visit https://www.leedsrhinosnetball.net/rhinos-netball-110.php
